Among these assembled saints were enlightened souls who profoundly comprehended the tribulations of people dwelling in Kali Yuga, the epoch characterized by avarice, lamentation, deceit, discord, and worldly desires.

Guru Narrating Story
The sages approached the renowned narrator and learned scholar, Suta Maharshi, and respectfully petitioned:

"O venerable Maharshi, humanity in Kali Yuga endures tremendous suffering from destitution, disease, melancholy, disappointments, domestic discord, and anxiety. Please enlighten us about a straightforward vratam or spiritual observance that common people can easily undertake to achieve tranquility, abundance, and freedom from affliction."

Suta Maharshi responded with a benevolent smile:

"Such a holy vratam certainly exists. It is the sacred Satyanarayana Vratha, sanctified by Lord Vishnu Himself. Anyone who observes it earnestly with genuine devotion and truthfulness obtains divine blessings and safeguarding."

The assembled sages listened with rapt attention as Suta Maharshi recounted the timeless conversation between Sage Narada and Lord Vishnu.

Narada Maharshi Observes Human Affliction

On one occasion, the celestial sage Narada journeyed throughout Earth, visiting hamlets, kingdoms, wilderness areas, and urban centers.

Wherever his gaze fell, he witnessed anguish:

  • Impoverished households struggling for sustenance

  • Ailing individuals suffering without assistance

  • Virtuous people encountering adversities

  • Households divided by avarice and wrath

  • To See the World
Souls imprisoned in anxiety, worldly bonds, and wretchedness

The elderly man tenderly inquired:

"Why do you grieve, O Brahmin?"

The Brahmin joined his palms and answered:

The woodcutter absorbed every word attentively. Though impoverished and unlettered, his spirit remained untainted.

He supplicated inwardly:

"O Lord Satyanarayana, should I acquire sufficient earnings today, I vow I shall likewise conduct this vratam."

That afternoon, something miraculous transpired.

Nevertheless despite all his affluence, he remained discontented because he possessed no offspring.

One afternoon, whilst attending a hallowed congregation, he observed devotees conducting the Satyanarayana Vratha.

Stirred by conviction, he supplicated:

"O Lord Satyanarayana! Bestow upon me a child. I vow I shall conduct your vratam."

Through celestial benevolence, his spouse presently delivered a magnificent daughter designated Kalavati.

As seasons elapsed, the merchant became progressively engrossed with commerce, fortune, and material pursuits.

Gradually, he disregarded the hallowed vow he had pledged to the Lord.

Kalavati's Matrimony

Kalavati matured into an elegant and righteous young maiden. Subsequently, she was wedded to a distinguished merchant's son.

Following the matrimony, Sadhu Shetty and his son-in-law arranged for an elaborate maritime expedition to augment their commerce.

Once more, the merchant neglected his pledge to conduct the Satyanarayana Vratha.

This negligence summoned divine examination.

The Merchant's Tribulation

Throughout their journeys, the merchant and his son-in-law arrived in a remote realm.

At that precise moment, brigands had plundered precious treasures from the sovereign palace and clandestinely concealed them adjacent to the merchants' lodging quarters.

The sovereign's sentinels uncovered the plundered treasures in proximity and instantaneously apprehended Sadhu Shetty alongside his son-in-law.

Notwithstanding their blamelessness, both were incarcerated. Their vessels, affluence, gemstones, and merchandise were seized.

At their residence:

  • Impoverishment engulfed the household

  • Attendants deserted them

  • Sustenance grew insufficient

  • Kalavati and her mother endured tremendously

One afternoon, whilst wandering sorrowfully through the thoroughfares, Kalavati observed devotees conducting the Satyanarayana Vratha.

She heeded attentively to the hallowed narrative and abruptly recollected her father's forsaken pledge.

She returned homeward and informed her mother:

"Our tribulation has manifested because Father disregarded his commitment to Lord Satyanarayana."

Mother and daughter instantaneously conducted the vratam with reverence and earnest contrition.

Celestial Benevolence Reinstates Everything

That precise evening, Lord Satyanarayana manifested in the sovereign's vision and cautioned:

"The imprisoned merchants are blameless. Liberate them instantaneously, or your dominion shall endure affliction."

Alarmed, the sovereign awakened and commanded their liberation forthwith.

Not merely were the merchants emancipated, but all their confiscated affluence was restituted with dignity and remorse.

Sadhu Shetty comprehended his grievous transgression.

Descending to his knees, he supplicated:

"O Lord Satyanarayana, pardon my negligence and haughtiness."

As the merchants navigated homeward jubilantly with reinstated affluence, Lord Satyanarayana resolved to examine them once more.

The Lord manifested disguised as a modest ascetic and inquired:

"O merchants, what merchandise are you transporting?"

Thoughtlessly and arrogantly, Sadhu Shetty chuckled and responded:

"Nothing precious — merely foliage and vegetation."

The ascetic tranquilly responded:

"So shall it be."

Moments thereafter, the merchants were appalled to uncover:

  • Their gemstones had vanished

  • Their precious merchandise had metamorphosed into foliage and vegetation

Comprehending this was celestial retribution for dishonesty and arrogance, Sadhu Shetty lamented bitterly.

He supplicated earnestly for absolution.

The Lord, gratified by authentic contrition, reinstated all the affluence once more.

This chapter imparts:

Merchant

When the merchants ultimately returned homeward securely, the household orchestrated another magnificent Satyanarayana Vratha celebration.

Following completion of the puja, Kalavati became enthusiastic to encounter her husband and hastened outward before accepting the hallowed prasadam.

Abruptly, throughout the journey, her husband enigmatically vanished.

Alarmed and devastated, Kalavati lamented and supplicated intensely.

Presently she comprehended her transgression:
She had neglected to respectfully receive the Lord's prasadam.

She promptly retraced her steps, received the prasadam with profound reverence, and fulfilled the ceremonial observance appropriately.

Shortly thereafter, her spouse securely reappeared.

Consequently the Lord demonstrated the significance of honoring hallowed ceremonies wholly and genuinely.

Chapter Five — King Tungadhwaja's Pride and Redemption

One day, while returning from a hunting trip, the king came across a group of devotees performing the sacred Satyanarayana Puja. After the worship, they respectfully offered him the holy Prasad. However, blinded by pride, King Tungadhwaja ignored the Puja and refused to accept the Prasad.

Lord Satyanarayana was displeased with the king's arrogance. Soon, the king began to lose his wealth, power, and kingdom. Misfortunes surrounded him, and he suffered greatly.

Realizing his mistake, King Tungadhwaja sincerely repented and performed the Satyanarayana Vrata with devotion and humility. He accepted the Prasad with respect and prayed for the Lord's forgiveness.
